The Tremont Volunteer Fire Department was incorporated in 1949 by a private group of volunteers who were charged with protecting all property from fire and with assisting in other emergencies. It initially relied on various fund raising projects for its income but now is supported by the Town with an annual budget of approximately $80,000. The department has a fleet of 5 engines, a cold water rescue boat and a Crew cab pickup which are kept in two fire houses, one in each end of town.
It has a roster of approximately 21 active members who experience about 50 calls per year. The Department is also a signatory on a mutual aid agreement to assist any fire department in Hancock County if called upon. Even though the original sirens are still on the roofs of the two firehouses, the Department now communicates using UHF radios on the frequency of 154.250 MHz. The Department is entirely volunteer, with members receiving a small stipend based on the number of emergency calls to which they respond. When not engaged in Department business, most of the firemen hold regular jobs with many also actively serving on Town committees and on the Southwest Harbor/Tremont Ambulance Service. They further work to improve fire safety by working closely with local residents and within the Tremont School and offering a free smoke detector program.
The Department serves the Town of Tremont which is located on the West side of Mount Desert Island, Maine, and is made up of the villages of Bass Harbor, Bernard, West Tremont, Seal Cove, and the off shore village Gott Island. It has a total area of about 52 square miles with 35 square miles of this being water. The town also includes about 3000 acres (4.7 square miles) of the Acadia National Park. Tremont's year round population is about 1600 which approximately doubles in the summer with seasonal residents and visitors. In 2000, there were 705 domiciles used by year-round residents and 370 used by summer folk plus businesses including, boat repair/manufacturing and storage, restaurants, an active working waterfront, few retail stores and a historic Coast Guard operational lighthouse.
Please remember that ALL outdoor fires of any kind, other than for cooking purposes, require a written burning permit in hand at all times. Permits may be obtained for free from the Southwest Harbor Dispatch center or (for a minimal fee online)from the Maine Forestry Service. Call 244-7911 for information.
All homeowners are urged to put their house numbers out in a location and in a form which can easily be seen and read from the road, even at night and in the worst of weather. Call the Southwest Harbor/Tremont Ambulance office (244-3521) to order top quality reflective signs offered at cost.
